Emperor Foundation mobilized over 40 volunteers from Emperor Group, including staff members and their friends and relatives, to visit more than 70 elderlies from the service network of St. James’ Settlement on June 1.
Volunteers first helped to pack gift bags with Dragon Boat Festival rice dumplings and groceries at Sau Mau Ping Community Centre. They then learnt some general DOs and DON’Ts and received some briefings about a simple podiatry survey they would carry out at the elderly’s homes. After that, off they went.
The elderly on the list, scattered all over East Kowloon, are all participants of a service scheme of St. James’ Settlement that will handle their funeral arrangements at their requests made ahead of time. It goes without saying that they are living on their own with no family support. Some of them remain young at heart, living colourful lives despite their loss of family ties, while others do look battered by their aged single life. Volunteers’ 30-minute stays at their homes mean concern for their well being from the community, hopefully bringing them the feeling of warmth and keeping them connected with the world outside.
Volunteers exchanged their thoughts at a debriefing session afterwards. They shared a common belief that their relationships with the elderly were not givers and takers. Instead both took benefits from such life-to-life interactions.
