The tournaments series has made an impression to more than 10,000 people, with a high resolution mega LED screen situated at the center of the mall to further enhance the audience experience. The tournaments were also live streamed on popular online platforms such as TWITCH, YOUTUBE, and YAHOO!HK; furthermore, the Finale was also closely followed by PRC and Taiwan media, such as Tencent Games, Sina eSports and YAHOO eSports to let audience closely engage.
Dr. Bernard Chan, Under Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, witnessing the establishment of EES and the first Emperor Cup last year, praised the achievements of EES over the year; and believed both EES and the local eSports industry are accelerating its development. The government, eSports industry and the mass media have been giving extensive attention and strong support to this emerging industry; the public's awareness and recognition of eSports are on a steady rise, while the industry continues to grow.
Emperor Cup 2018 is the largest offline eSports tournaments held in a mall with players from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau and $300,000 total cash prizes. The response was beyond expectation; it attracted nearly 200 teams and 800 eSports enthusiasts to participate. This year featured "PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS" (PUBG Corporation), one of the most popular battle royale games in the recent years. EES has chosen MOSTown to hold the tournaments to enhance public awareness towards eSports and to accommodate the large amount of players. A photobooth with surreal game scene and experience zone were also set up to increase public engagement.
Participation was fierce this year, and it means more players are choosing eSports as their career choice. The goal of Emperor Cup is to help EES to identify potential eSports talents. The three professional teams under EES have achieved outstanding results. The G-REX LOL team entered the League of Legends World Championship early this month; marking the best record, round of 16, in the history for Hong Kong funded teams with Hong Kong players. This encouraged us to continue to explore eSports talents and lead them to go further. The blue print for EES development is to identify and foster more eSports talents, including players, anchors, commentators, event and content planners. EES will strive to optimize youth training system and build a solid foundation for Hong Kong eSports industry.
