(Hong Kong, November 7th, 2012) \"Emperor Hospice Service Programme\", a pioneering project jointly launched by Emperor Group and Social Workers Across Borders in 2007 in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, has won widespread recognition ever since. The two parties presented their achievements in a press meeting on January 29, 2013 at Emperor (Happy Valley) Hotel, during which they also had a cheque presentation ceremony to symbolize that Emperor Group would continue to fund the project. Officiating guests to the press meeting were Dr. Albert Yeung, Emperor Group Chairman; Mr. Zhang Tiefu, Head of the Social Work Unit at the Liaison Office of the Central People\'s Government; and Mr. Terrence Chan, President of Social Workers Across Borders.
Dr. Yeung, who is also Life Honorary President of Social Workers Across Border, volunteered to donate all proceeds from the sale of the traditional Chinese edition of his biography “Zhengqi” (do not let people look down on you), when the book went public last year. “Sales revenue from the book has gone up to over HK$2 million. I’ve rounded it up to HK$3 million with extra funding from Albert Yeung Sau Shing Charity Foundation to support the operation cost of the project for the coming two years” he said. With the setup cost of the “Hubei Hong Kong Emperor Elderly Care Centre” and subsidies on medical services taken into account, Emperor Group has donated over HK$25 million on this project up till now.
Over the past six years, \"Emperor Hospice Service Programme\" has accompanied 638 seniors on the road toward the end of their lives; showed their care to 7,000 elderly participants with group activities; offered life education to 4,000 persons. The project has also been heavily involved in training and exchange programmes so as to share their practical experiences to students of social works, local charities and government officials.
Dr. Yeung added, “Looking back six years ago, the idea of hospice care service was hardly known in China. Our project is now receiving much attention in Hubei and has won various national awards.” Apart from daily operation, Dr. Yeung’s donation of HK$3 million will also cover the purchase of a van for the setup of an outbound service team in Hubei. This will be another first-of-its-kind project, extending the service to the solitary elderly scattering elsewhere in the province.
Emperor Group first worked with Hubei Charity Federation in 2006, funding the establishment of “Hubei Hong Kong Emperor Elderly Care Centre” adjacent to Rongjun Hospital in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, specializing in palliative care to the solitary senior. In 2007, the Group complemented the service with \"Emperor Hospice Service Programme\" in collaboration with Social Workers Across Borders, providing counseling service to the terminally ill at the centre. This is the first ever joint project between Hong Kong social workers and mainland medical practitioners. The project won “The Most Influential Charity Project Nomination Award” from the Ministry of Civil Affairs of China in 2007 and “Hubei Province Charity Award” from the Ministry of Civil Affairs of Hubei Province in 2008 because of its innovative efforts in attempting to break the death taboo in the Chinese tradition.
